What is Currency Symbols?
The currency symbol or currency sign is a graphical representation in place of the currency name. Many symbols used for the most frequently written and traded currencies have symbols based on the Roman alphabet. Use slashes and horizontal bars to help distinguish between letters and currency symbols. Some currencies, such as US dollars, British pounds, euros, and yens, have been immediately recognized worldwide with their attractive currency symbols.
The United States uses the symbol $ for U.S. dollars, the United Kingdom uses £ for the British pound, the euro zone uses the currency symbol €, and Japan uses the ¥ for the Japanese yen. There are many other countries they also use their own currency symbols and ISO Codes to represents its currency.
What is Currency ISO Code?
The currency ISO (4217) code is a three-letter alphabetic code used in banks and businesses worldwide. In many major currencies, the ISO code is well-known in the exchange rates, posted in the newspaper, in banks, used in air tickets and international train tickets.
The currency ISO code is identified by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is a non-governmental organization that provides standards for commerce, manufacturing, communications, technology. For currency, the governing document is called ISO 4217.
The first three-digit code used to specify one currency in a currency pair quote is called the base currency or transaction currency, and the second currency in the currency pair is called quote currency. Currency pairs indicate how much quote currency is required to purchase a unit of base currency.
For example, in the GBP/USD currency pair, GBP is the three-letter ISO currency code for the British pound, and USD is the code for the US dollar. If the exchange rate of this currency pair is 1.2750, it means that to buy one pound, we must pay 1.2750 US dollars, because in this case, GBP is the base currency and USD is the quote currency, so we always buy the base currency.
